I'm turning over a new leaf! *ANNOUNCEMENT* - instead of longer brain-crunching posts which only appear when the brain is on full power I have decided to write shorter comments based upon the several tweets which I archive for myself each day. I archive these tweets because they (the content of their links) prompt a thought usually connecting other ideas, and I keep the reference for building into a potential bigger story elsewhere e.g. the KINSHIP blog. So using the idea of Seth Godin and keeping things short and sweet I will add a little commentary around one selected "archived tweet of the day".
Google Unleashes More Big-Data Genius With a New Cloud Service | Enterprise | WIRED
Sometimes I don’t keep the actual tweet I just archive the link to the article, as in this case about the how "Google continues to share the wealth of the uniquely powerful software systems it erected to run its enormous online empire."
Why did I keep this article?
- First and foremost because it demonstrates dramatically - to me at least - that large legacy / dinasour companies who insist on maintaining massive internal IT investments, including so-called "private cloud", are setting themselves up to be effectively disrupted and destroyed by smart firms which utilise the almost unbelievable power of the type of Platform as a Service which Google is making available with Cloud Dataflow.
- Google's now obsolete way of processing this was MapReduce which open sourced is Hadoop which the rest of the world now uses to crunch data. While the rest of the world is trying to figure out Hadoop, Google has dumped it and moved on. Hello! Can you afford the investment to catch-up? Can you try to figure out Hadoop while entrepreneurs set up to attack you by buying Google's new data analytics by the transaction? Do you seriously think that you can do better than Google with your in-house IT technical data analytics skills and resources?
Related: I keep these links because they relate to other ideas I see. This link also relates to services such as IBM's Watson as a Platform and other enormously powerful cloud-based services which are becoming available to anyone on a pay-per-transaction basis. The combination of these is the real meaning of cloud, and should strike fear into all incumbents in all industries. Today, we are only at the 1% point of this force.
